  7. Urban Agriculture – It…

Urban Agriculture - It is Possible

The average age of the sub-saharan farmer is said to be 60 years. While some researchers argue that the age is much lower, it is clearer observable that more and more young people are shying away from rural agriculture as they migrate to the cities and urban areas.

Urbanization is increasing in African countries. In 2000 the United Nations reported that 38% of Africans lived in urban areas. This figure is expected to increase to 55% by 2030. Urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges, but indications for Africa are that the difficulties outweigh the opportunities. One implication is that young people need to be reintroduced to agriculture.

One way to do that is to generate their interest in urban agriculture through programs and products that appeal to them. With this mindset, Honourable Zanetor launched the It Is Possible with Agrihouse Foundation to train urban youth in snail and mushroom farming and rabbit rearing. More than 300 people have been engaged in the It Is Possible project over the past 7 years. Current iterations include downstream processing such as yoghurt making etc.
